IT'S A GREAT DAY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!
A ceremony takes place on the 1st weekend of May honoring Fallen FF's, however 170 FDNY Firefighters are not on this wall. Tom wants to have a ceremony in NYC to honor the 170. Does anybody have a suggestion?
TOM RICHARDSON continued by informing us that the FDNY Application Period has been extended to 9/30/24. Also you can get on the job by applying to be a Fire Dispatcher and then take the FDNY Promotion. EMS Personnel can also take the Promotion Test as long as they have 4 years in the Rank of EMS-this is an update. They did this because they are losing personnel too fast because of the promotion to Firefighter.
NEXT SUBJECT: DETECT CANCER
Go to https://www.detectogether.org/ to learn about how you can detect cancer on yourself. A member, Tom Gentile (E229) came up and told a story of how he did a self examination in the shower of his scrotum and knew something was wrong. He followed up with an MRI. They found a mass in his lower abdomen. If balls are hard go and get an Ultrasound of that area, its the best method of detection.
Cancer is the #1 cause of death in the Fire Service, so early detection can improve your chances of survival.
NEXT SPEAKER: JOE BRYANT FROM THE HOLY NAME SOCIETY

OUR NEXT SPEAKER-RETIRED LT. MIKE McLAUGHLIN (E-236 / L-175)
Mike was in a wheelchair at the Meeting. He told his story of how he suffered a severe injury in a Backyard Pool, where his neck snapped and he was paralyzed from the neck down. They told him he would never walk again, but he didn't listen and in 76 days he walked. He wrote a book about it: "THE 25 YEAR JOURNEY OF AN OLD SOUL". To purchase this book click on the following Link:
https://www.amazon.com/25-Journey-Old-Soul/dp/B0D9CZV2C8
The cost is $9.99
Durring his 76 day convalesence he said there were only 2 days that he didn't get a visitor. The encouragement he received was the motivating factor in his recovery. He started off in Nassau County Medical Center, then to Lenox Hill Hospital, then to Mt. Sinai Therapy. He said it was very frustrating in the beginning but his drive to return to stand up and walk again was what moved him and of course all of his friends and family who supported him. He never gave up and to this day he is still fighting to walk normally. After he spoke he got a STANDING OVATION.

The City has until today (6/27/24) to appeal the last court ruling; in an article in Tuesday's Daily News it said: The Adams administration asked New York’s top court last month to hear its appeal of those lower-court rulings. It remains unclear if the top court will agree to do so. So we don't know whats going on. If anyone knows if the courts have granted the city permission to appeal, let us know.
